Hellblade is being developed by Ninja Theory as an independent AAA game, meeting the standards of the top games in the marketplace. The game is based on Celtic myth. The protagonist is Senua, who suffers with depression and anxiety. The camera sits behind her as she fights through the underworld dealing with the psychotic manifestations of her depression and anxiety.
Hellblade is the newest game from Ninja Theory, developers of Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Oddyssey to the West, and DmC: Devil May Cry. The game is a third person action game follows Senua, a Celtic warrior, on her journey through a Viking Hell. The game was originally announced for PS4 and is now confirmed as coming to PC. Ninja Theory has stressed the fact that they are trying to make a AAA quality game without a large budget or a publisher. The game currently has no release date, but they are aiming for 2015.
The Wellcome Trust, an independent charitable foundation, is supporting the development of the game. Paul Fletcher, Professor of Health Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge, is a consultant to the game developers on the mental health issues.
Hellbalde was first revelaed with this in-engine trailer shown at Sony's 2014 Gamescom press coference. The trailer depicts the main character Senua meditating in a sacred area over a long period of time. The dead man that she is kneeling in front of starts to gasp at one point, and then some type of unseen enemy starts to surround Senua before she pulls out her blade. Ninja Theory stated that the main point of this trailer was to convey both the art style of the game and the type of character that Senua is . The trailer has a visual style that resembles Heavenly Sword, but there is no connection between the two games.
Hellblade is scheduled to come out in 2016 for PC’s and PS4. During the development process, the creators are sharing the whole process of development, on the Hellblade site and on their YouTube channel, including previews of the game like the following
